How To Make A Fridge Smell Better And Get Rid Of Stale And Foul Odors

I started Clean Mama when I couldn’t find the safe, natural (and beautiful!) products I wanted for my home. My cleaning routine soon followed and along with my results, I was finally able to keep my house clean. The system worked so well for me that friends and family started using it as well. I started the blog in 2009 and was even the first person to sell home decor prints on Etsy!

Soon, Clean Mama was reaching people like you in homes all over the world! I loved hearing how much it was helping people improve homes and lives. All these years later I still think my products and practices are the best solutions to keep you from choosing between a busy life and a clean home.

In the meantime, I’m here to share with you a very simple and effective cleaning tip: how to clean stainless steel appliances so they shine!

We recently moved into a home with a beautifully renovated kitchen, complete with FOUR stainless steel appliances (5 if you count the gas stove!). I’ve never had to clean stainless steel before in my life, let alone! I tried to avoid my hard work of ruining surfaces and putting off cleaning as much as I could, but of course, it wasn’t long after we moved in that the fridge looks like this:

Then a friend shared with us a tip he heard from a salesperson at an appliance store: use mineral oil to polish stainless steel. She swore by it and said it not only worked to brighten the surface, but it helped keep it shiny and removed fingerprints and smudges.

BUT, we didn’t have mineral oil, and I wasn’t even sure what it was or where to buy it… A quick google search led me to find that this had been done successfully before, so I was excited to try it! (Don’t have baby oil? You can try olive oil instead!)

We Tried 5 Methods To Clean Stainless Steel Kitchen Appliances — And The Winner Is Ridiculously Effective

First, clean the tools with a soft, damp cloth. Baby oil will make the surface shine, but it won’t actually clean the dirt. For really tough dirt, try adding a little vinegar to wet leather. Don’t worry about the water marks left by the cloth, we take care of that!

Then you need baby oil and a dry, soft cloth. A microfiber cloth is best, but I didn’t have one on hand, so I used an old soft cotton t-shirt.

Put some baby oil on your cloth and then wipe along the grain of the stainless steel. (What? You didn’t know that steel has a grain? Yeah, me neither. Look closely and you’ll see lots of tiny lines going in the same direction. Can you see mine? Go side by side? in the lines tiny and not perpendicular to them, or you run the risk of scratching the surface). Then, with almost NO pressure, turn the crease to the dry side and gently wipe away the oil. I ended up with a couple streaks on my first pass, but then went over them again with a little more oil and got the perfect shine I was looking for.

And best of all, I’ve found that this method actually removes those little munchkin fingerprints! (And I love that it’s completely safe for her, good for chemical free cleaning!)

How To Clean Stainless Steel Appliances Without Streaking

I easily cleaned my fridge, dishwasher, oven and microwave in less than 30 minutes. Is it worth it. And it’s amazing that even if the dishes are dirty on the counter (just pretend you can’t see them in the shadow of the microwave) the whole kitchen looks so clean!

Do you have any tips for keeping your kitchen spotlessly clean? I’m always looking for great ideas and tips to inspire me…especially when it comes to cleaning!

I look forward to sharing great family and group tips with you next month; until then, I’d love for you to visit me on Facebook or Pinterest! And a big thank you to Bonnie and Trish for letting me visit them today!

How To Remove And Prevent Fingerprints On Stainless Steel

I was really excited about adding stainless steel to our kitchen because I love white appliances. Judge! It’s true. I had to be sure to go with stainless steel. One thing I was really concerned about was the greasy fingerprints, which I noticed on all the display models in the store. (Maybe I should email this post to those sources?)

There are three small currents through this house, which means that thirty fingers are actively leaving their marks all over my house and stainless steel appliances. It will be very quick when a child adds all ten fingerprints to the mix. The kids live here and I don’t care if they remind me.

However, it is good to clean the utensils in the kitchen and give the children a clean and new account for their finger-smearing art. Right?

And my detergent costs me less than 25 cents for two full bottles. And it’s organic, non-toxic, smoke-free and completely safe for me and my kids. I actually use the same detergent to wash my fruits and vegetables.

Alternatives To Spray Cleaners For Stainless Steel

First, greasy fingerprints clean up very well with a degreaser. That makes sense, right? Just make sure you have a degreaser that is safe for your stainless steel and easy to clean.

Step 1) To clean the fridge, I start by cleaning the water tank. Please don’t forget the whiskey! Clean this thing like you think I’m going to personally come to your house to inspect.

Step 2) Take this cooler well. I totally cover my fridge with degreaser and clean this bad boy. These green fingerprints disappear. Important: Clean with a movement from side to side, following the grain of the stainless steel.

Now for the best part. Window cleaner costs about 1 cent per bottle when made with Basic H compound and degreaser costs about 22 cents to make. And they are not bad lightning. And it works.
