Despite more limitations than years ago, Android is still a more comprehensive platform than its competitors. You can still do what you want within reason. There are tons of apps that change your experience, and we’ve got a few good ones to get you started. Here are the best personalization apps for Android.

This list focuses specifically on changing or toggling UI elements. If you want home screen themes and visual customizations, we recommend checking out our list of the best theme apps here.

We also want to give OEMs the tools to change things. For example, stock Android lets you choose between navigation buttons and gestures. Samsung has a good lock that allows Samsung users to do all kinds of crazy things on their devices. TruePick (Google Play) is another good app for wallpaper and icon combinations. Finally, Android 12 and 13 include the original theme and we are very excited.
Gboard and SwiftKey are undoubtedly the best keyboard apps on Android. Both have extensive capabilities, decent features, gesture typing and many other features. The experience between the two is slightly different. Gboard is a little simpler with more basic features, and SwiftKey is a little more user-friendly. Either way, take advantage of your keyboard and you can both do whatever you want. This is a good place to start if customization is your goal. Both apps are completely free and ad-free. Swiftkey used to charge for themes, but not anymore.
Energy Ring and Energy Bar are two decent Android customization apps. The power bar puts the battery meter on top of the phone, as does the bar that drops down as the battery. Meanwhile, the Energy Ring version turns the pinhole camera into a battery meter. This is a great way to go all-in on a hole and get some functionality. These apps support most modern Samsung devices, and the generic Energy Ring app adds a few more. The rest can enjoy an energy bar. These apps have tons of customizations that you can make your own, and they seem to work pretty well without the ridiculous battery drain. But the price differs only because the developer works on an optional donation system.
IFTTT is an extremely powerful application. You use it to automate various tasks. It works almost flawlessly in 600 different apps, including Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. There are lots of things you can do and there are lots of IFTTT recipes online. The app customizes what your phone does instead of how it looks. With all the compatible apps and thousands of recipes, IFTTT is probably better than any other app except Tasker. It’s also completely free with no in-app purchases or ads.

KWGT, KLWP and KLCK allow you to create many things for your phone. KWGT is a widget creator that allows you to add lots of information, skins and designs. KLWP is a live wallpaper creator that basically does the same thing as KWGT but for wallpapers. Finally, KLCK lets you customize your lock screen. All three apps have a steeper-than-average learning curve, but you can also find pre-made themes in the Play Store and elsewhere if you want to borrow someone else’s design. There are a lot of cool things you can do with these apps if you take the time to learn them.
Reddit is a decent place for a lot of Android customization. There are several subreddits dedicated to the task, including ones for popular customization apps like IFTTT and Tasker, along with generic Android themes with lots of nice home screen ideas. Most of the posts show or tell you how to achieve a certain effect, what apps to download and how to set everything up. There are icon packs, KWGT templates, wallpapers and anything you can think of. Here’s an example of what we mean. It can be a bit confusing and there’s a lot of information and a few idiots here and there, but overall it’s a decent overall experience. We also want to give an honorable mention to TruePick (Google Play link), which does the same thing on a smaller scale.
Sharedr is one of the most unique customization apps out there. This refers to the prompt that appears when you share something. Today, the prompt shows a list of apps along with a random list of your favorite contacts. Sharedr brings order to chaos. You can customize the invite to show the apps you really want, and if you want, remove random contacts entirely. Installation requires some work. However, this app makes sharing things very easy if you take the time to customize it to your liking. It is completely free with no ads or in-app purchases.
Substratum and Synergy are theme frameworks for Android devices. They use Android’s OMS (Overlay Manager System) for the phone theme. These are quite complex software. Both also work without root on some devices. However, you get the best experience with both on Android Oreo with root. There are several themes in the Google Play Store that work with these frameworks. Prices vary, but none are very expensive. Both are great customization apps, but if push comes to shove, we recommend Substratum first if you have a modern Samsung device. Synergy is better for Samsung devices.
Manage Your Business With Zoho Mobile Apps
Tasker is probably the most powerful app in the entire Google Play Store. It can basically do anything. The app can automate tasks, create new actions, and do all sorts of other things. Well, we have limited space here and it’s not enough. Of course, with great power comes great trouble. Tasker is not an easy app to use. There are also many apps that directly support Tasker, and many apps like AutoTools that add more things it can do. Be prepared for a steep learning curve. The app costs $2.99 but has no additional in-app purchases or ads.
Volume Control Panel Pro is one of the decent apps to customize your volume panel. This lets you switch between horizontal and vertical sliders, you can use your actual volume buttons for activation, and you can also do cool things like double-tap media control. You can also change colors and themes to match what’s going on in your current theme. It’s inexpensive and performed very well in our tests. Volume Styles (Google Play link) is another volume control panel customization app if Volume Control Panel Pro isn’t for you.
Zedge is one of the most popular personalization apps. It has wallpapers and the selection is pretty decent. The big appeal of Zedge, however, is its ringtones, notification tones, and alarm tones. You can find a sample of great sound effects, songs and other content for this genre. You can also upload yours to the Zedge site if you have something you particularly like and want to share. This is one of the best ringtones and notification tones apps that you don’t have to make yourself. Customizing your Android device is mandatory.
Android launchers are your home screens. You can swap them out with other launchers, and each launcher brings its own set of customizations to the table. Additionally, most support universal customizations such as icon packs. You can get very specific looks depending on your trigger selection and some of them go off the rails. A notable example is Harmony Launcher (Google Play link), which makes your phone look like iOS 14. We’ve linked Nova Launcher next to the button because it’s a good place to start.

If we’ve missed any great personalization apps, let us know in the comments! You can also click here to see our latest list of Android apps and games! Task managers used to be really big things. Back in the days of FroYo and gingerbread, there weren’t many ways to save apps, and if you opened one, it stayed open to free up the precious RAM available on phones back then. Since the introduction of Ice Cream Sandwich and the stock Android task manager, there is no reason to use such an app. Future additions like dosage mode, flexible battery and other Android features will not render such apps useless. In fact, too much can drain your battery.
Granted, we probably can’t write any of this, but we’re concerned that everyone is rocking Android. And you too
